Student and Faculty - Using SPSS Statistics on a personal computer

As of March 18th, 2020, IBM provided a statement regarding at-home use of our University licensed SPSS Statistics Premium software suite.  We have now received official confirmation for Saint Joseph's University that allows students and faculty to download and install SPSS Statistics Premium v26 on their personal computers.  This software will be licensed to work until July 31st, 2020.

Statement from IBM:
"In order to address the rising concerns surrounding COVID 19 within the SPSS Academic Community,  IBM is amending your current SPSS Campus agreement to allow virtual computing and/or home use of SPSS Statistics at no additional cost for the duration of your current agreement."

How to download and install SPSS Statistics v26:

Below are instructions that students and faculty should follow to perform the installation on their personal macOS or Windows 10 computer.  SJU users will need to be logged into their University G Suite in order to access the software.  If you are not already signed in, you will be prompted to enter your SJU username and password.  Since not all students have the same version Operating System, there might be a slight variation to the steps you encounter.

Windows 10 instructions:

  • Download the Windows installer here.
  • If prompted, download the installer to your computer (see below for an example using Google Chrome):

  • By default, the file will be downloaded to your "Downloads" folder.
*IMPORTANT* - Right-click on the file you just downloaded, "spss_26_Windows10.exe" and select "Run as administrator" (see below):

  • Depending on your security settings, you may receive a warming from your antivirus/antispyware software.  Depending on your security software, you might need to allow the installation to run.  As an example, you may see the following notification.  If so, click on "More info":

  • You will then be presented with a new option, "Run anyway", which you should left-click on once:

  • You will be prompted to begin the installation by clicking "Install".  It is important to note that once the progress bar window disappears, the installation will continue silently and require no more interaction for several minutes.

  • After a few minutes have passed, please click on your Start Menu and look for recently installed applications, or scroll down to the letter "i" to see if you have a new "IBM SPSS Statistics" folder:

  • You should now be able to left-click on the shortcut, "IBM SPSS Statistics 26" and begin using the software.

macOS 10.14/10.15 instructions:

1. Download the macOS installer here.

2. In the dock, click the Finder, then the Go menu, then Downloads.

3. NOTE: if you double-click the installer package, this message will display:

Instead, right-click (or Control-click) on the file and click Open With, then select Installer:

You'll see a similar message, but this time you'll be able to click Open and proceed with installation:

4. When the Installer application opens, click Continue a couple of times, then enter your password when prompted.

5. Once the installation has finished, you'll be prompted to keep the installer or move it to the trash. It's recommended to move the installer to the trash to free up space on your computer.

6. You can find SPSS by clicking the Finder, then the Go menu, then Applications. It's located inside of the IBM folder.

Prior to the temporary allowance made by IBM in March 2020, our SPSS license did not include At-Home use. After July 31st, 2020, remote students will be required to purchase a license through JourneyEd here.
