Password Requirements

In 2017, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) implemented changes to strengthen password practices in order to better protect the University’s information resources. Our SJU password protects information entrusted in our care, as well as our own personal information such as paystubs, W2s, and other payroll information.  It's important to maintain a strong password for your SJU account that cannot be easily guessed or electronically cracked.

In an external review of the University’s security practices, our previous, relatively short password length requirement was cited as a significant weakness and a point of vulnerability.  As a result of this finding, OIT increased the minimum length of passwords from six to ten characters and to allow a maximum password length of 30 characters.  You will encounter this practice when you are next prompted to change your password.

A password meter has also been introduced as a way to gauge the strength of the password that you select.  Only passwords which the meter calculates to be strong or very strong will be accepted by the password management system.  If you are interested in enhancing your password’s strength before it expires, you can go to the login page of The Nest at any time and click on the Forgot/Reset Password link under the login button.

The criteria for your SJU password is as follows:

  • Have a minimum of ten (10) and a maximum of thirty (30) characters
  • Have at least one number
  • Have at least one lowercase letter and one uppercase letter
  • Have at least one of ONLY the following special characters ! % * + - / : ? _
  • Have a password Strength of Strong or Very Strong
  • Change at least three characters from your previous password
  • Cannot recycle passwords that were used in the past two years

One tip for creating a longer, stronger password is to think of a phrase and use the first letter of each word in the phrase to create the password.  If you add a number and special character with the phrase, a strong password will be created.
