What is backed up by CrashPlan?

Body

The CrashPlan application runs when you login to your computer. However, CrashPlan only backs up what's in your "user" or "home" folder, with some exceptions.

Some examples of data that is backed up by CrashPlan:

  • Desktop
  • Documents / My Documents
  • Downloads
  • Movies
  • Music
  • Pictures

Some examples of data that is not backed up by CrashPlan:

  • Temporary / cache files
  • Files at the root of Macintosh HD or C:\
  • Applications
  • System / OS files
  • Virtual Machines (example: VMware Fusion VMs)
  • Files on external hard drives
  • Email
    • Data from most email applications (Apple Mail, Thunderbird, etc.) are not backed up
    • However, Outlook archives (.pst files) in My Documents are backed up
  • Google Drive

If you'd like to verify if something is being backed up, please login to the CrashPlan website.
