Group Assignment Grading Options

This article describes the two options for assigning grades for group assignments and shows how to select either option.

Overview

You have two options on how to grade group assignments in Canvas.

Option 1: All students in the group receive the same grade. 

  • Example: Group 1 earns a score of 45 points. That means that all four students within Group 1 earn a score of 45 points.

Option 2: Students in the group receive individual grades. 

  • Example: Group 1 has four students in it. Student A earns a score of 50 points. Student B earns a score of 33 points. Student C earns a score of 50 points. Student D earns a score of 45 points. 

Settings

  1. Open the assignment.Click "Edit."

  2. Scroll down the settings to "Group Assignment."
  3. The default setting is for each student in the group to receive the same grade (Option 1 described above). To assign each group member a separate grade (Option 2 described above), select the checkbox next to the phrase "Assign Grades to Each Student Individually."
