Windows 11 is now available for "in-place" upgrade. This article explains the process to upgrade your Windows computer and the benefits.
What to know about your "in-place" upgrade to Windows 11
With past Windows upgrades, the Office of Information Technology needed to scheduled appointments and work with you to do the upgrade. OIT has developed a process to allow you to do the upgrade without an appointment.
- Your data will remain exactly as before
- You do not need to schedule an appointment or work with a technician; you can even do it from home it that's easiest for you
- You can decide when the upgrade should begin. You will have the option to: pick a time, restart tonight, or restart now. Once the upgrade starts, you should allow up to two hours for it to complete

- Wait until the end of the day to start the upgrade; it will take a while
- Make sure your computer is plugged in
- There is no need to watch it during the upgrade; your computer will likely restart during the upgrade and this is normal behavior

1. How do I upgrade my SJU-provided Windows 10 computer to Windows 11?
If you would like to upgrade to Windows 11 and be part of the Windows 11 early adopters group please enter a ticket through our service catalog.
2. Ok, I’ve entered a ticket to upgrade to Windows 11, do I have to do anything?
You’ve asked (and have been approved) to be a Windows 11 early adopter. Within a day, you should be on the lookout for any Windows updates in your system tray.
3. Do I have to bring my computer to the Technology Service Center?
No, it is an “in-place” upgrade. You keep your computer. Just stay on the lookout for a Windows System Update (see image below).
4. Once I see the Windows update and actually start the upgrade, how long will it take to upgrade to Windows 11?
We recommend starting the upgrade at the end of the day while you are still cable-connected to the network. It should complete roughly within an hour or two and may reboot itself once or twice during the process.
5. How will I know that my computer is Windows 11?
The "look and feel" of Windows 11 is slightly different with the start menu (typically) in the middle. Advanced users can open a command prompt and type "winver" to get confirmation.
6. Will my applications disappear after upgrading to Windows 11?
Since it is an in-place upgrade, all your applications and all your data remain in place.
7. Will it work if I am at home?
Yes. As long as you have Internet connectivity, and you are plugged-in, your upgrade will proceed. In rare instances, it is possible that your machine is not eligible (does not meet the criteria for) a Windows 11 upgrade.
