Optionally Enrolling in MFA

Summary

This article helps walk you through setting up MFA optionally, if for some reason you have a type of account that does not require MFA.

Body

There may be a few scenarios where certain types of accounts are not required to use MFA.  That doesn't mean that you still can't set up multi-factor authentication on your own.  The following steps and screenshots will help walk you through getting different types of MFA configured for your account (if you aren't already enrolled).

  1. Head to https://account.microsoft.com/
  2. You'll be presented with the following:Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

  3. Enter your username, followed by your password:Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

  4. If you do not have MFA set up, you'll be logged into your Microsoft account portal.  Here's an example:Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

  5. Next, click on "Security Info".  You'll see this on the next page, where you'll want to click "Add sign-in method":Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

  6. Next, you'll see this screen.  We recommend setting up "Microsoft Authenticator":Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
You can set up a Passkey or hardware token, which are also much more secure than using Phone or Email.

  7. If you select Microsoft Authenticator, you'll be shown the following screen which instructs you to install the App on your mobile device:Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

  8. Next, once you've installed the App, you'll need to open it and begin the set up process:Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

  9. After click "Next" (shown above), you'll be given a unique QR code that you'll need to scan with your App on your phone.  Here's an example (do not scan this):Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

  10. If for some reason you previously enrolled in MFA, but maybe it was an insecure way such as using Phone or Email as an option, you may see this screen:Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
This is just letting you know that you should set up a strong form of MFA, such as the Microsoft Authenticator
