Am I able to send from my personal alias, firstname.lastname@sju.edu, in Gmail?

Body

Yes, you are able to set up your SJU Gmail account to send from your alias.  By default, your account will only send mail from <username>@sju.edu, however the alias will be active for receiving e-mail and nothing needs to be done on that aspect, so you will not be losing any messages sent to your alias. What you will need to do is to configure your Gmail account to use your alias as your sender address, which is done as follows:

Step 1: Open Gmail Settings

  1. Go to Gmail
  2. Click the gear icon (⚙️) on the top right
  3. Select “See all settings”

Step 2: Go to “Accounts and Import”

  1. Click the “Accounts” tab
  2. Look for the section called “Send mail as”

Step 3: Adding the Alias

  1. Click “Add another email address”
  2. Enter:
    • Your name (how you want it to appear)
    • Your alias email address (firstname.lastname@sju.edu)
  3. Keep “Treat as an alias” checked
  4. Click Next Step

Step 4: Verifying the Alias

  1. Gmail will send a verification email to your alias
  2. Open that email
  3. Click the confirmation link (or enter the code)

Step 5: Start Using Your Alias

When composing a new email:

  1. Click the “From” field
  2. Choose your alias from the dropdown

Optional: Set Alias as the Default

If you want to always send from your alias:

  1. Go back to the Accounts tab in the settings (as done in step one)
  2. Under “Send mail as”, click “make default” next to your alias

Please note that, much like with The Nest, changing the default address to your alias will not change the username that you will use for logging in to Gmail.

If you are having issues creating or using your alias, please create a ticket with the SJU IT team here , stop by the TSC in Science Center 129 or call 610-660-2920 for further assistance.
