Password Management Changes - Effective March 2017

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is implementing changes to strengthen password practices in order to better protect the University’s information resources. Our SJU password protects information entrusted in our care, as well as our own personal information such as paystubs, W2s, and other payroll information.  So, it’s important to maintain a strong password for your SJU account that cannot be easily guessed or electronically cracked.

In a recent external review of the University’s security practices, our relatively short password length requirement was cited as a significant weakness and a point of vulnerability.   In fact, during the external penetration test, weak passwords were the means by which testers attempted to access SJU resources.  As a result of this finding, OIT has taken measures to increase the minimum length of passwords from six to ten characters and to allow a maximum password length of 30 characters.  You will encounter this new practice when you are next prompted to change your password.  At that time, you will be required to follow new rules and enter a longer password.

Additionally, a password meter has been introduced as a way to gauge the strength of the password that you select.  Only passwords which the meter calculates to be strong or very strong will be accepted by the password management system.  If you are interested in enhancing your password’s strength before it expires, you can go to the login page of The Nest at any time and click on the Forgot/Reset Password link under the login button. Here is a screenshot of the new password criteria being introduced:

One tip for creating a longer, stronger password is to think of a phrase and use the first letter of each word in the phrase to create the password.  If you add a number and special character with the phrase, a strong password will be created.  To explore other ways to create a strong password, please watch the video available in the SJU Technology Service Center Knowledge Base by clicking the link found here: https://sju.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/KB/ArticleDet?ID=26145.
