Creating Mobile-Friendly Audio Overviews Using Gemini Notebook

Why Generate Audio Overviews?

Providing alternative format choices directly aligns with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. Heavy reading assignments can present barriers to students with visual processing differences, long commutes, or varying linguistic backgrounds. Gemini Notebook's Audio Overview feature automatically synthesizes text into an engaging, two-person podcast-style conversation. Because it is strictly grounded in the materials you upload, it highlights key themes accurately without missing core academic arguments.

Implementation

Step 1: Create a Focused Reading Notebook

  1. Open Gemini Notebook and create a New Notebook.

  2. Title it according to the specific content block, such as: Module 3 Audio Source Hub.

  3. Upload the target text files. This works best with dense primary literature, book chapters (PDFs), or comprehensive study guides.

Step 2: Generate the Audio Overview

  1. Locate the Studio pane on the right-hand side of the page.

  2. Find the section labeled Audio Overview.

  3. Customize the audio overview to your specific needs, then click Generate.

  4. Note: Gemini Notebook will take a few minutes to process the uploaded source text, extract primary themes, and synthesize a natural, two-host conversation discussing the material.

Step 3: Download and Deploy to Canvas

Once the audio file is ready, you can make it accessible to your students in Canvas. There are many options on how to do so, but uploading to Panopto and adding to a Page is recommended.

  1. In your Notebook, click the options menu (three dots icon) next to the generated audio track.

  2. Select Download to save the audio file (.wav or .mp3 format) to your local computer.

  3. Log into Canvas, navigate to your target Course, and click Panopto in the left-hand course menu.

    1. If Panopto is not available in the course menu, you must enable it. 

  4. On the Panopto page of your course, select Create, click Upload Media, and upload your downloaded Audio Overview.

    1. Update all captions in Panopto to ensure that they are accurate.

  5. Click Pages in the left-hand course menu. Clearly title the page, then add the audio overview in Panopto by embedding the video. 

    1. Pedagogical Best Practice: Always place the audio file directly alongside the original text document inside Canvas, labeling it clearly as “Optional Audio Overview (Supplementary Study Aid).”

Best Practices

  • Intentional Use Case: Explicitly inform students that these audio files are AI-generated, high-level structural overviews intended to support—not completely replace—the close reading of assigned texts.

  • Accuracy Review: Listen to the generated track prior to publishing it to ensure that highly technical jargon or disciplinary acronyms are pronounced correctly and framed accurately.
