FAQ about Academic Dates

Canvas Dates

How long do students have access to courses in Canvas once the course ends?

Once the course ends, it will be in a read-only state. Students will have access to the read-only version until their account expires or the instructor disables access through course dates or concludes the course.

When are courses created in Canvas?

Courses are automatically generated 70 days prior to the start of the term.

When can instructors publish courses in Canvas?

Courses can be published prior to the start of the term at the discretion of the instructor. Publishing a course allows the instructor to send messages and announcements to students and makes the course available to the students. At the latest, courses should be published by the start of the term.

Note: If the course dates are not changed from the default, the course will be in a read-only state after publishing until the listed start date of the course.

What is the difference between availability dates and due dates on graded assignments in Canvas?

The due date is the date and time when the assignment is due. Student assignments submitted after the due date will be marked as late in the Gradebook. Due Dates are not required in Canvas, but they are helpful in managing course workflow and deadlines. In addition to setting a due date for an assignment, instructors can specify a specific date range when students can access and submit assignments. These dates are called availability dates. These dates are optional and can be set depending on how you want to manage the assignment. For more information on setting due and availability dates in Canvas, access the Canvas guide.
