Installing FortiClient VPN On A Personal Computer

Overview

SJU offers VPN services to staff who may need to access university resources from off campus. The following is a guide on how to configure your FortiClient VPN to allow these connections on a personal computer. These instructions should not be used for an SJU-issued computer.

Download & Installation Instructions

Download and install the "Forticlient VPN" Client from Fortinet website using the following link (located near the bottom):
- https://www.fortinet.com/support/product-downloads
- Select the VPN-Only version and choose the correct version for your operating system
  - Do not install the ZTNA or EMS version
Launch the FortiClient Software
Select "Configure VPN"
Enter the following information into the VPN Connection configuration screen:
- Connection Name: SJU VPN (you can name this whatever you'd like)
- Remote Gateway: vpn2.sju.edu
- Make sure the port is set to 443. If it is not, click "customize port" and type 443 in the field.
- Be sure "Enable Single Sign On (SSO) is checked.
- Select "Use external browser as user-agent of saml user authentication"
- For your convenience, you may select "save login" if you are the only person who uses VPN on this computer.
Hit Save once you have completed the configuration
- If you are using a Mac, at this point you will need to make some permissions changes:
  - Open System Settings
  - Open Security & Privacy Settings
  - Scroll down until you see "System software from application "FortiTray" was blocked from loading" - Click ALLOW
Next, select your newly created VPN in the drop down menu and type in your username and password in the login box.
Hit "Connect"
When Microsoft Authenticator prompts you, authorize the connection.
Once you have authenticated and your login information is correct, you have successfully connected to VPN
