Overview of the 90-Day Evaluation
All new full- and part-time staff at Saint Joseph's University are required to go through a 90 day evaluation at the conclusion of their initial probationary period. This process will automatically launch in Workday when the team member is close to the 90-day mark, and it facilitates an early conversation about what is going well and what needs improving. It also allows the new team member to document any early accomplishments, questions, or obstacles they are facing. Managers will be able to easily alert the HR Employee Engagement team for low performance and begin conversations about how to coach new employees.
Staff will be asked to rate themselves on the following critical competencies (please note that these differ slightly from our annual performance conversation process, as they are targeted to conversations with newer team members):
- Communication Skills: Communicates ideas, opinions, and instructions in a clear, well-organized, and concise manner. Listens to understand others’ points of view. Employs active listening. Asks appropriate questions of peers and supervisors when needing guidance or clarification.
- Professionalism: Shows high level of dedication towards doing a good job. Reports on time to work, to meetings and other obligations. Is present and prepared. Uses good safety practices when applicable.
- Problem Solving: Shows initiative and creativity in problem solving situations. Develops new ideas and suggestions. Demonstrates flexibility/agility as priorities change.
- Organizational Skills: Prioritizes and completes tasks. Focuses on accuracy, neatness, effective use of resources. Creates systems to stay on track.
- Interpersonal Skills/Teamwork: Deals positively and effectively on a collaborative basis. Functions as a member of the team. Treats others with respect and courtesy. Act in the interest of the larger community. Appreciates diverse viewpoints. Takes accountability for their actions/responsibilities.

Steps in Workday
- When the process launches, the staff member will receive a self-evaluation task in their inbox. Click "Get Started"
- Please note that you may see certain dates associated with the full calendar year (such as January 2024 or December 31, 2024) - this only refers to the calendar year in which you were hired and is not the true due date. You do not need to be concerned about these dates, just the specific "Due Date":
- On the first page, you will be asked to agree/disagree as to whether or not you have met the competencies listed. You must rate each competency. There is an optional comment box at the bottom of the page if you'd like to comment on any of the competencies in particular. When finished your ratings and optional comments, click "Next".
- Note that you can "Save for Later" - if you need to pause while completing your evaluation, you can click this button and return to the evaluation from your inbox at any time.
- Next is the "Additional Comments" section with two optional questions related to your experience at Saint Joseph's so far and any other feedback you may have. Once you have completed these sections, click "Next". If you do not wish to provide any comments, you can leave these sections blank and click "Next".
- The final page for self-evaluations is the "Review and Submit" page, where you will see all of your ratings and comments. Please review these for accuracy. If you need to go back and correct or add anything, you can click on the specific page to edit it. Once you are comfortable with your responses, click "Submit".
- At this time, your self-evaluation will be sent to your direct supervisor for review and so they can provide their evaluations. They will reach out to schedule a meeting with you once that is complete to review your full evaluation and discuss it.
- Important note: Once your supervisor has completed their evaluation and you have met to discuss it, you will receive a final acknowledgement task in Workday.
Notes for Managers
After your new team member completes their self-evaluation, you will receive an inbox item to complete the manager evaluation. Click "Get Started", and you will be able to see their ratings and comments next to your opportunity to provide your ratings and comments. Note: if you are not sure whether the 90 day evaluation has launched yet for your employee, you can check in the Performance tab of their Workday profile to see if it's in progress.
In addition to the sections discussed above, you will also have an "Overall Rating" page. You will be asked to rate and comment on whether or not the employee has adequately completed their 90-day probationary period. Any evaluations with unsatisfactory ratings will be automatically routed to the Employee Engagement team for review and discussion about appropriate next steps. Please feel free to reach out to our team at any time if you have any concerns about a team member's performance, including at any point during the probationary period.
Remember that all comments throughout the evaluation are for performance-based feedback ONLY and will be viewable to the employee once the evaluation is completed. If you have any other concerns, questions, or information you'd like to discuss or relate to the HR Employee Engagement team, please make sure to reach out to them directly.
Once you review and submit the full evaluation, you will receive a task to schedule the performance conversation with your team member. Only submit this task when you are ready for the team member to review their full 90 day evaluation and comments.
