Overview
Faculty reviews for all colleges will launch in Workday on December 1 each year. Prior to beginning your "Faculty Self-evaluation", it is recommended that you update your Career Profile and any goals from the calendar year. See the "Related Articles" on this page for links to full instructions on how to access and update these sections.
Please note that you are able to start your self-evaluation and stop it at any time - Workday saves your data every 90 seconds and can also be prompted to save and close your evaluation at the bottom of every page of the review. If the "Save" button is not highlighted/available on your review, that means that Workday has saved your progress already and no further action is needed on your part and you can close the evaluation.
Primary and supporting indicators of each section are listed out on the appropriate page of the review in Workday.
Part 1: Career Profile & Goals
Your Career Profile and goals can be populated throughout the year OR during the review process. It will be helpful to update these sections throughout the year so that the reports within the review are pre-populated as soon as the review opens in December. As you will see, the review questions themselves only ask faculty to provide commentary and DO NOT require faculty to retype any of their achievements, awards, publications, professional affiliations, etc. into the review itself.
For each year, it is critical that any/all information for these sections is completed for that calendar year. You should discuss with your chair and college how far back you may want to enter these same achievements/publications, along with whether or not other sections, such as Education and Job History, are necessary. Those sections are not pulled into the review, so completion of them is up to the department/college.
Your Career Profile
On the Career Profile, you can enter any publications, awards, or activities (including service), as well as professional affiliations (such as membership in a professional organization or volunteer work).
The reports dynamically update, so any time you update the information on your profile, the reports will also update. These reports are also visible to the chairs, deans, and the Provost's office.
Please review the article listed in "Related Articles" or this short video to review instructions on updating your Career Profile.
A Note About Goals
Goals marked as "Completed" or goals created after the evaluations launch on December 1 will NOT be automatically pulled into your evaluation and will need to be manually added. Archived goals cannot be pulled into an evaluation, so only archive goals that are fully completed/cancelled and will not be discussed further (such as goals from previous years).
Part 2: Completing the Review
The instructions and screenshots below go through the full evaluation. You can also review this short video "Completing Your Self-Evaluation (7:12) for the same information.
- On December 1, you will receive an inbox task in Workday to begin your self-evaluation. The inbox task itself will have a lot of important information, including a brief review of the timeline of the review process. When you're ready to begin your review, click "Get Started" at the bottom of the task:
- Inbox Task:
- Timeline & "Get Started" button:
- The first page of the review is your Teaching Commentary. You will see all of your awards, activities, and publications for the year pop up in a report at the top of your screen - this can be moved and ignored for the first page. All questions on the teaching commentary page must be completed.
- If you need instructions on how to download a copy of your courses taught this year, please see instructions in the related articles. You are able to format your responses, include links to external documents, and/or expand the window to focus on one answer at a time as you see fit.
- When you've completed this page, click "Next" or use the pages on the left sidebar to click to the page you'd like to move to next:
- Research/Scholarly Commentary: Completion of this section is required of all tenure-stream faculty and of those full-time non-tenure-track faculty whose departmental expectations include scholarship. If you closed out of the report that details your publications, awards, and achievements, you can access it again using the lightbulb icon on the left sidebar to assist you in completing this section:
- Service Commentary: Completion of this section is required of all tenure-stream faculty and of those full-time non-tenure-track faculty whose departmental expectations include service. You may want to consult the report to review any awards/achievements related to serivce, or your full Career Profile for any professional affiliations that are relevant to this section.
- Leadership Commentary: Per the Faculty Handbook, full-time faculty at the rank of associate professor should narrate on evidence of their potential for leadership. All full-time faculty at the rank of professor or higher should narrate on evidence of their demonstrated leadership.
- Goals: Any goals entered during the current calendar year that are not marked as completed or archived will be automatically loaded into your evaluation if they were created prior to the launch of the review process on December 1.
- To add a new goal, simply click "Add" and fill out the required sections
- If you have current goals to comment on or update, but do not see them loaded into the review already, click "Add", then click on the three lines next to "Add Existing". This will bring up a menu, where you can click on "All Valid Goals for Selection" and bring in any goal:
- Once you have completed the goals page, the final page is a full review of the evaluation. If you would like a copy of your original responses here, you can print a copy at this time by using the printer icon on the left sidebar:
- When finished reviewing, click "Submit". Workday will automatically route this review to your department chair (chairs who complete self-evaluations will be evaluated by the appropriate dean) and you will receive a confirmation email.
Your chair will now be able to see your answers/commentary and the Career Profile reports and be able to provide their own comments on the same questions. Chairs can find more information and screenshots in the "Related Articles" section.
