VR/Nanome User Guide

General Usage Tips

  • The headset controllers connect wirelessly via Bluetooth, or via the provided USB-C ‘Y’ cable.

  • The controllers will only charge when plugged into the headset while the headset is powered on, or by plugging the Y-cable into a standard USB-C charging brick

  • The headset cannot be used within 2 meters of another headset due to the Bluetooth connection with the controllers. Doing so will cause interference between the controllers on both headsets, making them inoperable until you move far enough apart.

Required Software

Streaming between the HTC VIVE Focus 3 headsets and the Nanome application requires three software components to be installed on the PC:

  • SteamVR (does not require a Steam account to use)

  • VIVE Business Streaming

  • Nanome

I.T. will be responsible for installing these applications on the campus lab computers.

Additionally, the VIVE Business Streaming app is required on the VR headset itself.

There is a Nanome application available on HTC VIVE Focus 3’s app store, however it is not required to interface with the PC application via USB-C cable.

Using the HTC VIVE Focus 3 headset with Nanome

  1. Power on the headset and controllers, and make sure you can get to the “lobby”.

  2. On the PC, open SteamVR.

    • When you are prompted to update permissions, choose “Dismiss”

  3. On the PC, open VIVE Business Streaming

  4. Connect the headset to the PC via provided USB-C cable.

  5. On the headset, you will be prompted to choose the USB mode. Select “VIVE Business Streaming”

    • You may optionally test the connection to the PC in the SteamVR app - Use the option “Enable VR tracking”

  6. On the PC, open Nanome.
Note: This must be done last. Opening Nanome before the headset is fully connected will result in a “no headset detected” message in Nanome.

Installing firmware updates

It will be the responsibility and expectation of the academic department (e.g. Pharmaceutical Sciences) to keep the headsets up to date, and install any available firmware updates on the HTC VIVE Focus 3 headsets.

After powering on the headset, if it successfully connects to the wifi you may be prompted to install a firmware update.

Before doing so, make sure the headset is plugged into power and that the controllers are plugged into the headset via their provided USB-C ‘Y’ cable. This is to avoid any connection issues to the controllers after the update is complete.
