When do my benefits terminate if I leave the University?

Coverage Termination

If you are covered under the University’s group medical, vision and/or dental plans, your coverage will end on the last day of the calendar month in which your employment ends.

Your basic life insurance/accidental death & dismemberment, short and long-term disability benefits provided and paid for by Saint Joseph's University ends on the last day of your employment.

For example, if your last day at the University is September 5, your basic life/AD&D, short- and long-term disability benefits are terminated on September 5, and any medical, vision, or dental plan coverage would terminate on September 30.

COBRA

Per the US Department of Labor: "The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) gives workers and their families who lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits provided by their group health plan for limited periods of time under certain circumstances such as voluntary or involuntary job loss, reduction in the hours worked, transition between jobs, death, divorce, and other life events."

Employees will receive information from the SJU Benefits Team regarding their COBRA eligibility upon notice of their resignation.

If you have any questions about your termination of benefits or continuation options, including COBRA, please log a general benefits ticket here and indicate your preferred contact method and someone will reach out to you to answer your questions.
