Federal and State government regulations, and by extension, a Middle States' expectation, require that universities be able to demonstrate equivalent levels of learning activity across modalities. While the method of instruction may vary by course and by the department, the total hours of online instruction for all online courses must always total the required 42 hours*. To ensure that you are developing a course that meets the required hours of instruction, examine and complete the SJU Instructional Equivalencies grid.
* The number of required hours directly aligns with the number of credits for the course. There should be 14 hours per credit. For example, all online 3-credit courses must equal exactly 42 hours (no more or less) and an online 6-credit course must equal exactly 84 hours.
