Kaltura to Panopto Migration: FAQ

The Office of Information Technology (OIT), in partnership with faculty representatives, has selected Panopto as the University's supported video management platform. All media will be comprehensively managed on one platform enabling students, faculty, and staff to easily access and share media.

When will I lose access to Kaltura?

On Friday, Dec. 22, 2023, faculty, students, and staff will no longer be able to upload new videos to Kaltura. Videos in Kaltura will still be accessible for teaching and learning purposes through the spring semester as we migrate to Panopto.

What will happen to my Kaltura content?

Beginning in January 2024, OIT will start transitioning all videos from Kaltura to Panopto. During the spring semester, all Kaltura videos from the past two years will be migrated by OIT to Panopto. To help prepare for the migration, we ask that you review your existing Kaltura videos and update the video’s title following a naming convention that will help you find the video in the future.  Faculty can review and update all videos they own by following these instructions

What will be migrated from Kaltura to Panopto?

In alignment with the video retention policy, OIT will migrate all videos uploaded into Kaltura within the last two years (2022-2024) with at least one play to Panopto. Videos from 2021 or earlier with no plays will not be migrated from Kaltura to Panopto. Your migrated videos will be available to you in one migrated folder in Panopto titled “Kaltura Migrations”.

Videos in Kaltura are still accessible for teaching and learning purposes through the spring semester as we migrate to Panopto.

How can I keep a copy of my older Kaltura content?

To maintain a copy of your Kaltura videos, faculty and staff can download their Kaltura videos that may be older than 2 years or have 0 plays following these instructions

What if I don’t see my videos once the migration is completed?

After the migration is completed, if you are missing videos, please submit a ticket online. As a reminder, videos older than two years with no plays will not be migrated or available in your Kaltura Migrations folder. If you wish to keep these videos, download them before May 31, 2024

Where do I create new videos in the Spring 2024 semester?

Starting in the Spring of 2024, any new videos can be uploaded to Panopto.

If I am a Faculty and want to use my old Kaltura videos and then upload new videos - will using both be confusing and/or can I use both?

Faculty can use both platforms. Existing Kaltura videos will be available throughout the spring 2024 semester in either Media Gallery or My Media in Canvas.  You will not be able to add new videos to Kaltura. New videos can be uploaded to Panopto.
